Not to say that everyone that votes for Trump is a Nazi, but we do know who the Nazis are voting for.

I’m a broken record today, but please grab a few hours to phone bank or door knock with us today. Phone banking can be done on your couch, and you won’t feel like a POS if the fascists win and you could’ve spent 2 hours after dinner on a Sunday to secure a few more votes.

I would volunteer for a campaign (or even just donate) in a heartbeat… but it’s unethical… I’m one of our nation’s poor, underpaid and overworked local news media staffers. To be clear, I’m not a journalist, but the rules preventing any appearance of impropriety apply to me as well. I can’t give up my job to work pro bono on campaigns (and it’s dubious for me to donate). I can’t have the journalists I work with appear to have any kind of hand on this (or any) election.

I beg you, please vote for Harris/Walz… that’s my personal opinion which does not reflect the stance or opinions of my employer or any of our clients/sponsors… which include the Donald Trump for President 2024 campaign and it’s affiliated PAC’s (honestly it’s wild having the fucking Trump campaign being both the reason I cannot but barely afford my bills and the thing getting me close to paying them). Seriously, the years 2016 to 2020 were a living hell for us working in local news. Fear of constant threats if we depicted “dear leader” in any light other than brilliant magnificence. How dare we report on the things Trump said and did if it looked bad in any way. Seriously… it was the most stressed I’ve been in my entire life and I’m a queer atheist living in the deep south. Also, no, I’m not moving… all my stuff and most of my friends are here.

For the first time in my life I phone banked for Harris/Walz starting last month. I was expecting to be yelled at by Trumpers but that wasn’t the case. In case anyone is nervous about making the calls, you dont call Trump supporters, you call Dems and Independents to remind them it’s time to vote and how they can get information on voting. I haven’t had any nasty calls yet.

Correct. The calls are very targeted toward helping people correct a ballot that isn’t being counted, or helping / nudging sympathetic voters to get out.

A random volunteer ain’t going to be able to deprogram years of maga propaganda in a 2 minute phone call. Those calls are a waste of time. Turnout calls are more effective.

But how do you get their numbers? Just dial randomly and hang up if the person sounds Republican?

When you volunteer with a campaign, you don’t get the phone numbers and don’t use your actually cell phone. You use a dialer program where the campaign dials and connects you via your computer. So you click a button that says you are ready to do a call, the program then uses their phone system to dial someone in their system and it connects the call to you via your computer. The phone numbers come from wherever campaigns get their lists from.

I’ve never done the calling or anything like that, but from what I understand they usually put the effort in calling people in battleground states, etc. Could be you live in a state where the effort isn’t worth the reward compared to another state. Or maybe your phone blocks it and considers it all spam. My phone flags all the vote texts as spam, wouldn’t surprise me if it does it for calls too.

The dialer software connects to a database with a huge set of phone numbers organized in various ways. The calls are often narrowly targeted - sometimes you are calling to confirm attendance at an event, sometimes you are leaving a scripted message for numbers that are known to always go to voice mail. You don’t do any literal dialing, you press a “next call” button and wait for someone to answer.

The door knocking is definitely more of a positive thing, but I got about 2-3 effective calls in a 2 hour window.

And if you get 50 people in a phone bank, that can translate to 100 ballots cured and or people at the polls.

And when you’re talking about elections that are won by hundreds of votes, that phone time matters.

Plus also make sure to encourage and remind any dem leaning people you know to get out and vote. Friends, family, neighbors, etc it makes more of a difference than you might think

And bring a friend of your phone banking. Grab a beer, have fun with it. It’s not hard and you’re going to be targeting sympathetic voters, not the maga brainwashed.

Dunno, I’m not a natural at this, so I’m still “decompressing”. I kept thinking of that picture with the kid holding a sign saying “It’s so bad, even the introverts are here!”

lol. I feel ya. I feel like knocking for ballot curing was easier than get out the vote knocking.

People who needed to cure a ballot had already voted, and they just needed to be told to correct something.
