(she/they)

Hi! You can call me Tadpole. I enjoy maps/geography, sci-fi and speculative fiction, classic and sports cars and motorsports, and retro and retrofuturistic technology from the 70s-90s. Also a racing, role-playing, indie and retro video game connossieur.

I am a certified lurker.

I don’t like the idea of claiming a whole group I disagree with is comprised of bots or paid agents trolling to create division, but at this point, the only plausible alternatives to that are either those people are having a severe martyr complex, or just are so overly privileged that they are divorcing themselves from reality and don’t/can’t comprehend the consequences of what they’re advocating, essentially treating this whole thing like a sports game.

Or maybe both, and are trying to throw trans people, black people, women, etc. under the bus to fuel their martyr complex in their stead.

I mostly lurk and prefer to not get involved in politics, but GOOD GOD I’M SO GLAD I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO FEELS THIS WAY. It’s so exhausting.

What sucks is that voting isn’t swearing a blood oath that turns you into a slave of neoliberalism and prevents you from doing direct action: you can do both. Voting isn’t going to save Palestinians (and it’s a bitter pill to swallow, I know), but it’s going to save lots of other vulnerable minorities (who never really asked to be born in the imperial core!), and still provide breathing room for direct action that can help Palestine.

Like… even if you don’t care about the safety of trans people, pragmatically speaking it’s immensely easier to organize as leftists in a neoliberal regime than it is in a fascist regime. Just look at what happened to the KPD when they proclaimed “first Hitler, then it’s our turn”. (Yes, the SPD backstabbed them during Weimar - RIP Rosa Luxemburg - but that pales to the Nazis basically rounding them all up and sending them to the gas chambers!) I don’t want history to repeat. Please don’t let it repeat.

  • This was a great review, thank you for sharing. I’ve been meaning to play Fallout 4, but as someone who loved the worldbuilding of New Vegas, the story puts me off.

What I’d really like is a mod that removes the game’s main storyline, so I can either focus on the adventuring/settlement-building aspects (thus turning the game into a sandbox), or combine it with good story mods and basically have them replace FO4’s main questline. The only mod I know that does it is Fallout London. (I really need to figure out how to run it on Linux…)

Do you happen to know or recommend anything that fits with what I’m looking for?

  • Fucking hell, seriously… pardon the invocation of Godwin’s Law, but people used the same “Legislative and Judicial branches won’t allow it” excuse to claim that Hitler winning the elections in Germany wouldn’t be that bad and we all know how it ended up.

The amount of people burying their heads in the sand regarding Project 2025 is infuriatingly high and I hate it.

  • It’s not that they don’t know about Project 2025, they just don’t care about it. I’ve seen so-called “centrists” straight-up claiming that Project 2025 isn’t real just because Trump disavowed it… ignoring the fact that he had to since it was actually hurting his poll numbers. (The people who wrote P2025 are core members of Trump’s campaign staff. How naive do you have to be to see that and still think a politician wouldn’t lie?)

  • I wouldn’t be so sure. Back in 2018 when Bolsonaro (also a very extreme fascist) was running for president in Brazil, someone also attempted to kill him and very nearly succeeded, and it’s pretty much agreed that the failed assassination attempt gave him a massive poll boost and helped him win. I personally had the unfortunate experience of dealing with people here who were previously undecided but afterward decided to vote for Bolsonaro because they saw him as a vicitm trying to be silenced.

Considering how US elections are severely lopsided to depend on a couple handful of states that demographically generally aren’t affected by the risks of fascism and therefore generally see American elections as a harmless sport, there’s a very real possibility they’ll see Trump as a “martyr” trying to be silenced and throw their vote behind him.

It also seriously doesn’t help that Biden’s just been making far too many gaffes while Trump came off like a “defiant strongman” over this. I hope I’m wrong, but I’m extremely pessimistic about this being anything but a massive win for Trump.
